Village of Cedarhurst Supports Federal Legislation Protecting Natural Gas Access

The Village Board unanimously approved a resolution in support of federal legislation that prohibits New York State from banning natural gas hookups. Cedarhurst is the first village on Long Island to formally support Congressman Nick Langworthy’s Energy Choice Act, which is intended to protect everyone’s access to affordable and reliable energy.

Currently, the New York All-Electric Building Act would prohibit gas hookups to almost all new homes and businesses.  However, for most of Cedarhurst’s families and businesses, natural gas continues to be the most practical and cost-effective heating and cooking solution. This resolution reflects Cedarhurst’s focus on protecting them from rising energy costs, preserving consumer choice, and supporting energy policies that are realistic and reliable.

“Our goal is to make sure our resident and business communities continue to have access to energy options that are reliable and affordable,” said Mayor Benjamin Weinstock. “As electric costs rise, it’s important that families and businesses aren’t limited to electricity as their only option.”

It is important to maintain flexible energy options for both homeowners and businesses, especially as electric costs continue to increase.  By supporting the Energy Choice Act, Cedarhurst is advocating for an approach that keeps affordability, reliability, and consumer choice at the forefront.
