Upcoming Storm

A major storm is expected to hit Long Island today into Friday which will bring heavy rain and freezing temperatures. According to the National Weather Service, there could be widespread flooding along the Nassau coast of 1 to 2.5 feet, with floods of up to 3 feet in some places. The flood warning is in effect from 5 to 11 a.m. Friday.

In addition to rain, the storm will also bring heavy winds. Average winds will be 20-30 miles per hour, the Weather Service warned, with gusts of up to 55 miles per hour. The wind advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight to 10 p.m. Friday.

Temperatures are expecting plummet down to around 13 degrees after it passes Friday night, with a wind chill dropping down to around -5 at times. The flash freeze could cause icing on roads and make driving dangerous.

Please be cautious and remember:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.  Falling tree limbs and other wind-blown debris can cause serious injuries or death.  The safest place to weather the storm is indoors.
  • If you lose power call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Emergency number: 1-800-490-0075 or text “OUT” to PSEGLI (773454).
  • Any downed wire should be treated as though it is a live wire. Therefore, do not approach or drive over it, or touch anything it’s contacting.
  • Report a downed wire immediately to 911 or call PSEG at 1-800-490-0075.  Do not text or email PSEG for downed wires.  Doing that only slows down the response.
  • For downed trees or obstacles blocking the road, call the Village at 516-295-5770.  We will keep the phone line staffed until the storm passes.
  • In an EMERGENCY, call 911.  For fire and medical emergencies only, you can also call the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department at 516-569-4411.
