Nor’easter Storm Alert

Do not put those winter coats and snow shovels away just yet.  A Nor’easter is expected to bring up to 14 inches of snow, coastal flooding, strong windsand potential power outages to the region. The force of the storm is expected to be its heaviest during our afternoon commute, making the roads difficult if not impossible to see.

During the storm, we strongly encourage everyone to say indoors.  If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, a snack and water in your vehicle in case you become stranded and must wait for help.

Our snow plows, sanders and snow blowers are tuned up and ready to roll.  We are confident that we are ready to tackle today’s storm.  But we need your help so that we can do the best possible job plowing the roads.  Please make every effort to avoid parking on the road, use your driveway or a Village parking lot.  If you must park on the street, try to have all the cars on the block parked on the same side.  We will plow to the curb and later, the cars can be moved to the other side and will gladly come back and plow to the other curb.

Remember, when shoveling your driveway, pile the snow to the right side of the driveway (in the travel direction of the street) so that the plow will not bury your driveway when passing by.

A few additional tips:

  1. Avoid going outside.  If you must, pay careful attention to avoid swaying branches, cracking sounds from tree limbs, flying debris and downed wires.
  2. If you live in a flood prone area, move cars to high ground to avoid flood damage. The highest spots in the Village are along the LIRR tracks. Feel free to use the parking lot behind Village Hall.  Just leave a note in the window with your name and cell number so that we can get in touch with you if necessary.  Also, now is a good time to check your sump pump to be sure it’s connected and working.
  3. Be careful not to park cars on designated coastal evacuation routes (Peninsula Boulevard and Route 878). You risk receiving a fine and having your car towed.
  4. NEVER touch or go near downed WIRES. Stay far away.  They could be live and can cause severe injuries and death.  Call 911 to report downed wires or call PSEG at 800-490-0075.
  5. If you are in a car and wires have fallen on or near your car, STAY IN THE CAR. Do not touch the door handles and do not open the windows.  Call 911 and wait for help.  Staying calm can save your life.
  6. In an EMERGENCY, call 911. For fire and medical emergencies, you can also call the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department directly at 516-569-4411.
  7. For downed trees or obstacles blocking the road, call the Village at 516-295-5770. We will keep the phone line staffed until the storm passes.
  8. To report a power outage, or to check on the estimated repair time for the restoration of power, there are many ways to contact PSEG:
