Properly Disposing of U.S. Flags

Memorial Day is fast approaching, and the Village of Cedarhurst invites its residents to celebrate not only with barbecues and picnics, but also with properly displaying our nation’s flag. The flag should be flown only from sunrise to sunset, unless illuminated properly at night.

If your Old Glory is showing its age, is tattered or torn don’t just toss it in the trash. The U.S. Flag code states that, “the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way….” Thus, when a flag is torn and tattered beyond repair, it’s time for it to be retired.

The most common method of retiring flags is a dignified burning.  This can be dangerous and should not be attempted at home.  That’s why we ask that residents to trust the Village.  Give us your old flags and we will make sure that they are disposed of properly and safely.   Drop them into our convenient flag receptacle located in front of Village Hall.
